Two tenses, one story
Instead of reading the rule, listen to the sentences — the pattern will stick.
Past Simple — the events, one after another.
I woke up early and went to school.Erken kalktım ve okula gittim.
Past Continuous — the background: what was happening at that moment.
While I was walking home, it started to rain.Eve doğru yürürken yağmur başladı.
when / while — when usually goes with a short event, while with an action in progress.
When the bell rang, we were still writing.Zil çaldığında biz hâlâ yazıyorduk.
Irregular verbs — you need to learn these: go → went, see → saw, take → took.
We saw a strange light and took a photo.Tuhaf bir ışık gördük ve fotoğraf çektik.
1. Choose the correct answer
Which part is the event and which part is the background? Decide from that.
While we ______ football, it began to snow.
Answer: were playing
The football was in progress when the snow started: background.
I ______ my keys yesterday.
Answer: lost
One finished event: Past Simple.
When she arrived, we ______ dinner.
Answer: were having
When she arrived, dinner was in progress.
They ______ to the cinema and ______ a comedy.
Answer: went / watched
Two events, one after the other: both Past Simple.
2. Put the verb in the correct tense
Use the verb in brackets. You can use short forms.
Last summer we to Antalya.
Answer: went
Last summer is a finished time: Past Simple.
While I a book, my phone rang.
Answer: was reading
The reading was in progress when the phone rang.
She the message until the evening.
Answer: didn't see
Negative Past Simple: didn't + base verb.
What when the lights went out?
Answer: were you doing
We ask about the action in progress at the moment the lights went out.
