The four steps of a body paragraph

The order is the same in every paragraph. Don't memorise it — see the logic.

1. Topic sentence — the paragraph's claim. It makes sense on its own and takes a position.

Governments should invest more in public transport.Hükûmetler toplu taşımaya daha çok yatırım yapmalı.

2. Explanation — why? Show how it works in one sentence.

This would reduce the number of private cars on the roads.Bu, yollardaki özel araç sayısını azaltır.

3. Example — concrete and moderate. Don't invent statistics; an observation is enough.

In Istanbul, for instance, the metro carries millions of passengers every day.Örneğin İstanbul'da metro her gün milyonlarca yolcu taşıyor.

4. Link back — go back to the question and connect it to your claim.

As a result, investment in public transport benefits the whole city.Sonuç olarak toplu taşıma yatırımı bütün şehre yarar sağlar.

Style — no contractions (don't, isn't), no spoken language, no exaggeration. Careful, measured language scores higher.

This approach is unlikely to be effective.Bu yaklaşımın etkili olması pek olası değil.

1. Which one scores higher?

Think about the Task Response and Lexical Resource criteria.

Which one works as the topic sentence of a body paragraph?
Answer: City governments should prioritise public transport over private cars.
A topic sentence makes a claim. The second one gives information but takes no position.
Which sentence is off-topic in the same paragraph?
Answer: Many people prefer to travel abroad during the summer holidays.
Task Response: every sentence must support the paragraph's claim.
Air pollution has fallen in the city centre. ______, traffic outside the centre has increased.
Answer: However
The two sentences point in opposite directions, so you need a contrast linker.
Which one is correct in academic style?
Answer: This approach is unlikely to be effective.
Contractions and spoken language lower your score; measured language is better.

2. Put in the linker

Write a suitable linker in the gap. The hint is in Turkish. Capital letters and punctuation don't matter.

Public transport is cheaper than driving. , it produces less pollution.
Answer: Furthermore
We add a second reason in the same direction.
Some cities have banned cars from the centre. , Oslo has removed most parking spaces.
Answer: For example
We move from a general claim to a concrete example.
Fuel prices have risen sharply. , more people now use the metro.
Answer: As a result
The second sentence is the result of the first.
Cycling is healthy and cheap. , it is not practical in every climate.
Answer: However
We put a limit on the claim: contrast.

3. Build the academic sentence

Tap the words to put them in order. You can tap a word again to move it back.

Hükûmetler toplu taşımaya daha fazla yatırım yapmalı.
